For the sake of non Malayalees, I have made a feeble attempt at translating another poem of Ms Thampi. Hope you will like it; maybe you will try your hand at it.

@Anil: Looking at the Malayalam original and its English translation ( these are the two languages I know best), I have always found a lot amiss in the translation. As you said, the cultural aspects cannot fully be converted without losing much of its richness. I do not know Spanish - so don't know about Marquez's works. But I have read that Spanish is a highly romantic, poetic language.

@Sujata; Yes, one has to be happy with it. I love Neruda's poems, but i wish I knew enough Spanish to know him better.Balachandran Vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10174364716507089780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-541988681105767002.post-48630108526677752562012-08-11T12:03:37.016+05:302012-08-11T12:03:37.016+05:30Translations often do not do justice to the origin...Translations often do not do justice to the original words. But then they are for those who cannot read the original. So, if not for the translation, we would not have glimpsed the beautiful world of poetry across borders.sujata senguptahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13101153080266818022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-541988681105767002.post-47717796641328917982012-08-11T10:50:06.453+05:302012-08-11T10:50:06.453+05:30I wonder if I would seek her web site or poems to ...I wonder if I would seek her web site or poems to read. Poetry is for kindered souls. And I'm yet not there , wonder if I ever 'll be.

Nevertheless , I feel some distinctive evocation in the lines!

Translation may not do justice, quite often. However if it were true, the creations of say Gabriela Marquez that we have read are inadequate and doing injustice to the authors creation in Spanish. But sometimes it outclasses the original. But not necessarily the cultural implications that underlie. Like doc said 'ente thanga kotame" has no parallel in English!!!!

Reminds me of the story of the Penguin Books dropping the idea of publishing Thakazhy's "Chemeen " in English.anilkurup59https://www.blogger.com/profile/07961961217418715354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-541988681105767002.post-22463775553891081702012-08-11T02:12:50.633+05:302012-08-11T02:12:50.633+05:30Emotions are so difficult to translate.Simply beca...Emotions are so difficult to translate.Simply because there are no equivalent words.
Whenever I read a Malayalam novel,I have wondered how it could have been translated.Like, when you say.. ente thamka kodam, and ente ponnumkodam, at the heights of ecstasy.
I havent read this writer.Have to look up.Something sensuous about her.dr.antonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16191095888228061156noreply@blogger.com
